The quality of the plant material provided was very good and the variety of additional trees, including walnut, were a real bonus and has helped to extend the selection of trees and hedging plants on the site. We already have the local WI visiting the site in autumn to collect fruits and we hope far more people will now do the same. We have a ‘free-to-all’ policy at Blanchman’s Farm with respect to edible fruits and what the public cannot harvest is enjoyed by the local wildlife. The walk around the perimeter of the site has been greatly enhanced by the addition of the hedges and trees"

The following is an extract from a letter recieved following the event: Dear Margaret, On behalf of Bearsted Woodland Trust and all the residents thank you once again for your very generous donation of tree whips of wild fruiting trees towards our hedge planting project which was done as you know during your National Tree Planting Week. Well what a great success this event turned out to be. On Saturday 26 November we had 195 residents of Bearsted and Thurnham turn out to plant Phase one of the planting. This was no mean feat to organise such a large number of people turning up at approximately the same time! It was just wonderful to see so many families with their children and the cubs and beaver groups. On Tuesday 29 November another 65 residents turned up to complete Phase two of the planting. This whole exercise was done ‘by the community, in the community, for the community’. Yours sincerely Peter Willson

Bearsted Parish Hedge

- Date: November 2011
- Time:
- Description: This hedge was planted to replace some felled sycamores along the edge of the village allotments. It will provide an extension to the allotment garden for the local tenants and residents. Feedback from the event was that "Our happy band of volunteers, some 15 on the day, planted the hedge. The main bulk of trees have been interspersed with the hedging to give us sustainable fruiting hedgerows, offering screening from the allotments without shading of the same. The path running alongside, this is probably the most heavily used path in the Parish and many positive comments were received on the day and since."

The Village Hall itself has been 10 years in the planning and the sustainable build was finally realised last year. The addition of an edible hedge to the surrounding landscape has been a great asset. Aesthetically, it will provide an attractive boundary from the road, but can also be used to provide fresh picking fruit for all that visit or use the hall. The staff from Barcombe Primary hope to build on the initial planting experience with follow up visits to carry out maintenance tasks and then finally to harvest the fruit to then use in cooking.

- Description: This hedge was planted between Sedlescombe Village Hall and Red Barn Field Nature Park. This has created an interesting hedge for people to see and as the School Walking Bus starts close to the area, it is hoped that children will become interested in free food grown locally, Following the planting the following email was received from the Parish Council: "I am writing on behalf of Sedlescombe Parish Council and the whole Village of Sedlescombe to thank you very much for the wonderful collection of fruiting trees and bushes which we planted between our village hall car park and a small local Nature Park today. The plants really were all of excellent quality. As there were so many plants, a small group carried out the preparation for planting earlier. Much of the planting today was done by a dozen children from our local Primary School helped by a group of local adults. We talked about the fruit as we planted. Even the pre-school children came to watch. Quite a few Primary School children wait near this hedge for the “Walking Bus” to school each morning and I know it will be a source of great interest to them as the trees and bushes grow and eventually produce fruit. Thank you again. Pauline J Raymond (Mrs) Sedlescombe Parish Council"
